The ICAR - National Rice Research Institute (NRRI) in Cuttack stands out as a leading institution dedicated to rice research in India. Throughout its history, NRRI has successfully developed numerous rice varieties tailored to different ecologies, along with various production and protection technologies. A notable innovation includes their patented Alternate Energy Light Trap (Patent No 357993), designed specifically to assist farmers in pest control.

In line with its commitment to support rice growers, NRRI has introduced the mobile application "riceXpert." This tool provides real-time information to farmers on a wide range of topics, including insect pests, nutrient management, weed control, nematodes, disease-related issues, suitable rice varieties for various ecological conditions, as well as farm implements for different farming and post-harvest operations. The app also encompasses features such as news updates, announcements, advisory services, FAQs related to common challenges, and information about the team behind it.

riceXpert includes a web-based application system that facilitates seamless communication between farmers and agronomists, allowing for immediate solutions to their queries. Farmers can utilize this app as a diagnostic tool in their fields, enabling them to submit customized inquiries in various formats—text, images, or voice messages—which will be addressed by NRRI specialists promptly.

The current iteration of riceXpert strives to address key concerns faced by farmers by providing both static solutions and dynamic responses through personal queries. Looking ahead, NRRI plans to enhance the app further by incorporating additional information and features based on valuable feedback from farmers and agricultural experts. Moreover, this application holds potential as a critical resource for researchers, students, and village-level workers engaged in rice cultivation across various regions of the country.
